Septic Tank Odor Inside The House

A septic tank will naturally create some rather unpleasant odors, but a properly set up and maintained system should stop these odors from entering your house. If you do detect a foul stench from your septic tank, there are some common causes and fortunately they are all relatively easy to fix.

Dry Drains

Most drains in your house have what is called a trap built into them. This trap is a U-shaped section of pipe which, when filled with water, stops odors from travelling through the pipe.

If the drain is not used for a significant period of time, the water may evaporate and allow the gases to escape. This often occurs in guest bathrooms or with other fixtures that are not used frequently.

This problem can usually be solved by simply running water through the pipe. Also, remember to use the drain periodically so it doesn't dry up again.

Problem With The Vent Stack

Septic tank gases are released through a pipe that extends through your roof called a vent stack. Sometimes the gases are not able to flow through the vent stack, and they come back into your house.

One possible cause for this is that the vents have either been frozen closed or are clogged with leaves or other debris. A few warm days should thaw out the pipes, but debris will have to be manually removed periodically.

Also, wind can blow the gases back down to your house after they have been released from the vent. This problem can be solved by simply raising the height of the stack.

Broken Seals Or Gaskets

A broken gasket or seal near the base of the toilet can cause odors to leak up into your house. Seals may become brittle due to freezing, or simply wear out over time.

A plumber should be able to easily replace a broken seal for you, if this is identified as the problem.

Conclusion

As you can see, septic tank odors in your house are fairly easy to identify and manage. Don't let your septic tank stink up your home, when it can so easily be avoided.
